The Panthers fell on the road to Waubonsee Tuesday night, 86-71. It dropped them to 3-2 in the Skyway with nine games remaining.
"Defensively, we have to take more pride in our one-on-one matchups. Guarding as a team is something we always preach. But it starts with us doing a better job of containing the basketball," head coach Jon Rush said.
Despite only trailing 35-34 at the half, the Panthers allowed the Chiefs to shoot 48.5% from the field in the second half.
A total of 19 turnovers failed to help their cause, but the squad missed a few bunnies near the basket they usually make in their sleep.
On two-point shots, the Panthers were 16-for-43 (37.2%), and it was tough sledding in a matchup featuring only two ties and two lead changes.Â
"Poor shot selection and turnovers are something that helps play into the game plan of a team like Waubonsee. We did a poor job of taking away the known factors. Give them credit for making plays," Rush said.
Jaylyn Kelly had a game-high 19 points and knocked down four three-pointers in the victory for the Chiefs.Â
Morton College did make 11 three-pointers, nine of which were made by Manny Rodriguez, Matas Deksnys, and Xavier Spencer.
The trio on Tuesday combined for 41 points, but they were the only ones in double figures. Kedric Anderson had 9 points off the bench, but it was too little too late in a game the Panthers had their chances.
While Morton College only attempted seven free throws, Waubonsee went to the charity stripe 21 times (made 17).Â
It will not get any easier for the Panthers come Thursday night. They will host Moraine Valley, who remains the lone Skyway unbeaten (5-0). The loss to Waubonsee dropped the Panthers into a tie with Elgin (3-2) for third place.
"Hosting Moraine Valley on Thursday will be a big test for us, who are undefeated in league play," Rush said.
The quick turnaround is nothing new for the Panthers, who will be ready for a strong bounce back in the Skyway.Â
