Notes, observations and other thoughts about basketball played at 38th and Central...
Just three games into league play, Morton College and Moraine Valley are the only two remaining teams left undefeated in the Skyway Conference at 3-0.
Morton College (12-4) heads to Sugar Grove to take on Waubonsee, which is 12-5 overall and 2-1 in the Skyway. The Chiefs are averaging 100.3 points per game, putting them third nationally in NJCAA Division II.
Like Morton College, Waubonsee does a good job of protecting its house. The Chiefs are 8-1 at home with the lone setback a 77-76 loss to No. 8 South Suburban.
Game time is 7:15 p.m. today (Thursday, January 15
th).
High five!
Morton College is coming off a 97-85 win at Lake County where the Panthers had five players in double figures for just the second time this season. The Panthers did it in their season opener at Illinois Valley.
Jordan Brooks led the Panther parade with 25 points, the third time this season the sophomore has scored 25 or more points in a game.
Jyson Kim added 16 on 7 of 11 shooting.
Kevin Cathey Jr. (15),
Zion Young (14) and
Cristian Revenco (12) also were in double digits.
Rush to success
Panther coach Jon Rush collected his 70
th career win vs. Lake County. Only three other men's basketball coaches in Morton College's 100-plus years have more wins in their four seasons.
Frank Lollino Jr. (2007-11) and Rick Kilby (1987-91) had 79 wins in four years, while Conte Stamas racked up 71 wins in his second tour of duty from 2011-15.
Rush is 70-40 lifetime at Morton College.
When in…
Five players in double figures, Morton College is 2-0
Four players in double figures, Morton College is 3-1
Three players in double figures, Morton College is 6-0
Call to duty
Rush has repeatedly said this season that any number of players can impact a contest. A non-starter has been the leading scorer five times this season.
Javerion Banks has done it three times, while
Danny Thompson and
Zion Young have been the top scorer once apiece.
Morton College also has had individuals score eight or nine points in a game 23 times this campaign.
The Panthers' scoring balance also is reflected in the fact that
Jordan Brooks' team-high 14.9 points per game is the lowest since the COVID season of 2020-21 when Latik Murphy's 12.4 points per game led Morton College.
Women's basketball notes
Catrina Sanders is Morton College's leading scorer with 222 points.
Niema Adams is riding a five-game streak of double-figure games that include a career-high 25 vs. Joliet January 10
th. The freshman guard is averaging 18 points per game.
Cecily Marroquin reached double figures for the first time this season with a 12-point night at Lake County January 13
th.
