Game Preview: Panthers Look to Extend Regular Season Streak

The Panthers are looking to extend their 33-game home winning streak on Wednesday night when they host Kankakee at Henry J. Vais Gymnasium.

The No. 2 squad has been catching fire this season from three-point territory. Their 12.2 three-pointers made per game is second in the NJCAA DII ranks entering the night.

Claire Hyde is the most productive shooter in three-pointers made (45 leads NJCAA DII), but there are other Panthers in the Top 10.

Kaylen Evans has made 30 (ranked No. 10) on the season and can take over late in competitive games. Having reached double figures in all 11 games, Evans can get to the cup and create shots for herself and other Panthers.

Jalyssa Carrasco has made 35 three-pointers on the season, ranking fourth in the DII ranks. The starting guard has made at least a quartet of three-pointers in four of her last five games.

Averaging 13.5 points during that timeframe, Carrasco has helped the Panthers post an average margin of victory at 35 points.

The undefeated Panthers (11-0) have several others performing at an impressive clip. Their team is so much more than three Top 10 shooters.

Mia Simpson and Frannie Metz are a pair of returning stars from their national runner-up in Port Huron last season.

Simpson is an athletic guard that can do it all on the court. She has been able to lead fast breaks and go coast-to-coast after a rebound. Taking high-percentage shots has been vital for the former Waukegan star.

Currently leading the nation in field goal percentage (70.4%), Simpson has picked up right where she left off last season. She has not missed more than five shots in a game all year despite taking double-digit attempts in over half of them.

Metz is another reliable scorer averaging 8.7 points per game. She has been vital to the team's success. The defensive stops, making extra passes, and communication on both ends of the court are the perfect ingredients for a winning culture.

The program has won 31 consecutive games in the regular season, which dates back to the 2021-22 season.

Looking at the opposition, Kankakee is 2-9 on the season but ranks in the Top 50 in several national categories.

Getting to the free throw line is imperative, and they are ranked No. 7 and 12 in free throw makes (15.1) and attempts per game (23.4).

They are connecting on their opportunities at the free throw line, making 67.8% (No. 21) of them.

The Cavaliers do not rely on three-pointers as the Panthers can, but they rebound the ball at an impressive rate. They are averaging 46.6 rebounds per game, ranking 23rd, and they have found some success against Skyway competition.

Kankakee knocked off Lake County 76-45 in early December and will attempt to end a pair of impressive Panther streaks on Wednesday night.

Following Wednesday's home matchup, the Panthers will head to Florida for non-conference games against Miami Dade and Palm Beach State.
