The top three-point shooting team in the NJCAA Division II ranks continued their productive ways in a 107-30 victory over Prairie State on Tuesday night.
Morton College made 14 three-pointers in the victory and had five players in double figures. Five ended up connecting on the three-ball, which was challenging for Prairie State to defend.
The Panthers had several stars on the night, but Kaylen Evans led the way with a game-high 25 points. The skilled guard has been torching the nets all season, but she has found her shooting touch over the last month.
Evans has averaged 25.2 points with 26 made three-pointers in the past five games. The number five seems to be a current trend for one of the top players in the country.
On the season, Evans has five games with at least five made three-pointers, and she has posted 20-plus points in five of her past six games.
"After being a little beat up from the last game, we knew we had to come out and give everything we could for this game. We competed and played our game," Evans said.
Leading by 43 points in the first half, the edge gave plenty of Panther shooters chances to light up the box score.
Claire Hyde caught fire in the third quarter, scoring 8 points and connecting on her three free throw attempts. She ended with 20 points in the victory and has seen plenty of success from behind the arc.
Hyde has made multiple three-pointers in all but one game, where the Panthers won by 48 points over Palm Beach State.
There have been seven games where Hyde made at least five three-pointers, and the Panthers are never out of a game with their magic from behind the arc.
Extending their home winning streak to 36 games and their overall regular season winning streak to 37 games was never in doubt on Tuesday night. The Panthers led by 65 points after three quarters and won by 77.
Jalyssa Carrasco added 14 points with four three-pointers, which will help add to her season total. Ranking in the top five in the NJCAA DII ranks has been an impressive start to her season, but we also saw Mia Simpson post video game-like numbers.
Simpson dropped 21 points and was unstoppable for most of the night, posting 13 in the second half.
Currently 3-0 in Skyway play, the No. 2 Panthers will go on the road to Grayslake against Lake County on Thursday night. That game could give the Panthers a shot at becoming the new No. 1 team after previously unbeaten No. 1 CCBC Essex suffered a road loss to No. 14 Harcum on Tuesday night.
