The Morton College men's wrestling team heads to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College for the 22-team NJCAA Dual Meet Tournament January 12th and 13th in Miami, Oklahoma. This event features 11 of the top 20 teams from the latest NJCAA wrestling poll.
The tournament format feature six pools, of which four have four teams and two have three teams. The tournament will be separated into a double-elimination championship bracket for the final 8 teams, and a single-elimination consolation bracket for the remaining 14 teams.
Morton College's pool features North Idaho, Cloud and Southeastern Nebraska. North Idaho is ranked fifth in the most recent NJCAA men's wrestling poll released January 9th. The Panthers climbed into the top 20 being tied 19th with Rochester.
On the individual side,
Manny Oliver keeps moving up the ranks at 157 pounds. He's currently ranked 3rd in the country. A potential showdown between top-8 wrestlers could take place in pool play as North Idaho's Porter Craig is 8th at 157.
Other potential day-two opponents for Oliver include No. 2 Tristan Stafford of Western Wyoming, No. 4 Michael Myers of Iowa Central, No. 5 Gavin Gust of Rochester, No. 6 Davin King of Labette and No. 9 Jackson Wilkins of Northeast Oklahoma.
Other top 20 teams include No. 1 Western Wyoming, No. 4 Clackamas, No. 5 North Idaho, No. T-6 Triton and Northwest Wyoming, No. 8 Iowa Central, No. 9 Northeastern Oklahoma, No. 11 Labette, No. 13 Carl Albert and No. 17 Southwestern Oregon.
The Panthers competed the week before at Augustana's Fred Johnson Duals in Rock Island, losing to four-year schools Augustana, Quincy and Westminster.
Morton College wrestling coach Chris Butz intentionally drew up the schedule this way so the Panthers could experience competing in a dual-meet tournament format.
