How impressive was
Sjenna Van De Weerd's six-goal match in Morton College's 9-0 Skyway Conference women's soccer at Oakton September 3rd in Des Plaines?
Within the first six minutes, the sophomore already had scored twice to equal Morton College's team goal total through its first four contests. And in just one game, Van De Weerd surpassed her 2024 season scoring total of five goals.
She also was a goal short of matching the Morton College individual single-game scoring record of seven goals, done last year by Isabella da Costa in a 12-0 win over Bryant & Stratton.
Van De Weerd then put together a three-goal flurry in a three-minute stretch at 49th to 52nd minutes. Her sixth and final goal came at the 70th minute.Â
"In the first 15 minutes, she missed a few chances and got frustrated," Morton College women's soccer coach
Dwayne Cruz noted. "She was working super hard. After we had a talk, she came out on fire in the second half."
Jasminder Ruby Kaur Sangha added her first two goals at the college level.
Frederikke Dam Jergensen also scored for the Panthers, while
Bruna Amar added an assist.
Zoe Hocke and
Marina Azevedo combined on the shutout, the second clean sheet for the Panthers this season.
The Panthers (2-3, 1-1 in the Skyway) ended a three-game losing streak and had scored only twice in their first four games. Making the losing streak even more maddening is that all three losses were by one goal.
"We're feeling healthy right now," Cruz said. "It was pretty exciting yesterday."
Morton College travels to Kankakee for a noon contest Saturday, September 6th.
