As the fall sports team at Morton College head toward the postseason, here's a look back on the latest accomplishments by our Panthers.
Volleyball
Ended Skyway Conference play with a winning season for the third straight year after taking out Elgin 3-0 (25-5, 25-12, 25-21). Morton College's 4-3 mark this year leaves the Panthers, 17-14 overall, at 13-7 in Skyway play the past three seasons.
Panthers in the NJCAA Division national rankings include:
Trenyce Bonner – 14th in kills per set (3.94), 16th in points scored (418.5) and tied for 20th in kills (343). The sophomore has 845 kills in her career.
Chassity Llanos-Padilla – 48th in digs (412).
Angelina Southard – Tied for 42nd in aces (52).
Nevaeh Lewis – 5th in total blocks (119).
Zoe Klaus – Tied for 29th in total blocks (91).
No. 4 Parkland visits Morton College Saturday, October 21st, to participate in a triangular with Kankakee. Panthers play Parkland at 1 p.m. and Kankakee at 5 p.m.
Did you know?: The Panthers produced a pair of setters with 1,000 career assists from 2015 to 2018. Melissa Favela rang up 1,281 assists from 2015 to '16 followed by Claudia Cisneros' 1,537 assists from 2017 to '18.
Women's soccer
The Panthers were in the hunt for a Skyway title until the final week of the season before losing back-to-back matches on the road within a three-day span. Morton College fell to Lake County 4-2 and Prairie State 2-1 to close Skyway play at 2-3.
Morton College, 6-5-1 overall, also did something they've only done three times in program history when an October 17th match against No. 20 South Suburban ended in a scoreless tie.Â
Edith Enriquez Santillanes, a freshman, leads the Panthers with 11 goals and shares team lead in points (28) with sophomore
Helena Peschke, who has eight goals and 12 assists. Both are in an eight-way tie for 47th nationally with 28 points.
Magdalena Bigdon also has eight goals.
The Panthers host Governors State University's JV at 2 p.m. Monday, October 23rd.
Cross country
Men's and women's cross country takes part in the Skyway Conference meet Saturday, October 21st at Moraine Valley. The women's race is at 11 a.m., followed by the men's at noon.
