Two Morton College student-athletes received the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference's Dick Durrant Sophomore Academic Athlete of the Year Award Winners for 2020-2021.
Rebeka Tovar (women's basketball and volleyball) and
Miguel Castro (men's soccer) were among the eight student-athletes from Skyway schools honored for having a 4.0 grade-point average.
Miguel Castro (No. 15), Dick Durrant Award winner
Both were winners not only in the classroom, but also in athletic arena. They played integral parts in helping their teams qualify for the NJCAA national tournament.
Tovar was individually ranked nationally in both sports, ranked in the top 50 in assists per set (42nd – 7.51) and top 25 in basketball for three-pointers made (23rd – 42). The graduate of Argo High School was named to the Region IV All-Tournament Team in helping the women's basketball program qualify for nationals for the first time in program history. Morton College's .895 winning percentage and season-ending nine-game win streak also were program bests.
The Panthers were 17-2 and ranked 12th in the final NJCAA Division II regular-season poll.
Castro's first and only goal of the season led Morton College to a 1-0 win over Phoenix in the Panthers' final game of pool play at the NJCAA Division II national men's soccer tournament. It was the first postseason win in program history for men's soccer.
This trip was the Panthers' second appearance at nationals in program history. Morton College's 10-3 record was the team's 12th consecutive season with double-digit wins. The Panthers also were Region IV champions and ranked 16th in the final NJCAA Division II regular-season poll.
Castro is a graduate of Morton East High School.
The Durrant Award is considered as the Skyway's most prestigious honor. Named after a former athletic director at Elgin Community College, Durrant championed the philosophy of academic as well as athletic excellence.
