While Morton College bowed out of the Region IV women's soccer playoff with a tough 1-0 home loss to the College of DuPage during the warmest October 30th on record, the 2024 Panthers did a number on the program record book.
Freshman Isabella Cetra de Costa's 26 goals and 57 points crushed previous single-season best of 18 goals and 42 points by Karen Santos in 2013. Isabella is eight goals away from matching the career record of 34 held by
Jacelyn Crawford (2020-22). She's also tied for second nationally at the NJCAA Division II level.
The Panthers' 63 goals and 50 assists also were new highs. Morton College's 2018 & 19 squads found the back of the net 60 times, while the 2019 squad collected 47 assists.Â
The 2024 Panthers also had the most players with 10 or more goals with three in
Isabella Cetra da Costa 26,
Lea Jager 11 and
Catarina Vaz 10.
Goalie
Lara Nunes tied a school record with six shutouts, matching the 2021 edition. It gives the Panthers 20 clean sheets in the last four seasons as well.
The Panthers were trying to become the third team in program history to reach 10 or more wins. Morton College ended up with nine wins for the third time in coach
Dwayne Cruz's five seasons at 38th and Central. Cruz and current Panther men's soccer coach Juan Franco are tied for the most career wins as a women's head soccer coach at Morton College with 36.
All-Region honors
Panther coach
Dwayne Cruz announced that Isabella Cetra de Costa,
Lara Nunes and
Penelope Armillei will receive all-Region IV honors. The all-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference will be announced Sunday.
Improv skills
Lucy Sugarman's corner kick in the 63rd minute created an own goal for the College of DuPage in Tuesday's 1-0 playoff win at Morton College. The freshman is the daughter of Eddie Sugarman, former director of Morton College's Jedlicka Performing Arts Center. Plus, her grandfather, Dwight Pawlowski, also has deep ties to the Cicero community - he's a committee member of Morton High School's Athletic Hall of Fame and for many years ran a 16-inch softball team that was a staple of the Hawthorne Park District's league.Â
Eddie's ability to teach improv skills must have rubbed off Lucy's soccer game. She usually plays center/midfield, but was move to a wing and looked like a natural against the Panthers.Â
